My sister-in-law Pam showed us all, when we trust Christ, there’s no blind faith because believing was her only way of seeing. With hands of grace, one by one, Pam spent her last few months blessing our family and friends by individually praying over them and anointing them with oil. That was Pam’s legacy of mercy. If you were a homeless person or a tagless animal, you had a home at the Stewart’s. Through the years, I watched in awe as Pam invited people into her home and built community for those who had none. She didn’t wait until Thanksgiving to tell of all God had done for her. She shared it in every act of service. If you want to bless, you had to b-less. Pam considered others before herself.
The LORD will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.Isaiah 51:3
Tonight at a City Council meeting in Mandeville, Louisiana far from Pam’s wooden farmhouse, my BEAUTIFUL sister-in-law was honored. By public proclamation, November is Compassion That Compels Month. A time to recognize the worldwide Compassion That Compels Movement along with our Sister 2 Sister mentoring and On Your Feet self-esteem/ career rebuilding programs.
“I wish you could have met both my BEAUTIFUL sisters- in- law.” That was as far I got in my thank you as I accepted the proclamation before the memories tightened my throat, and pulled tears from my heart. I ask you now the same request of the group gathered at City Hall. During the month of November, will you do this? Will you really see and reach out to someone in need? There are hurting people all around us.
Hope comes packaged in a hug, prayer, warm blanket or a meal that squeezes out the hurts and presses in the love of Christ. And when you show mercy like Pam did, a proclamation becomes more than words on a page, you will find them written across human hearts. I pray your Thanksgiving is filled with joy and you remember all God has done for you.
